New IT Rules Mandate 2-Hour Deepfake Takedown

Amendments to the Information Technology (IT) Rules, 2021, notified on February 10, 2026, and effective February 20, 2026, now require social media platforms to remove "sensitive" synthetically generated information (SGI), including deepfakes, within two hours of receiving a complaint. Previously, the deadline was 24 hours. The rules also mandate prominent labeling and embedded metadata for AI-generated content.
